Reading: My First Work Assignment

Teaching aims:

  1. Enable the students to recognize the variety of jobs there are in newspapers and what is needed to work in a newspaper office.
  2. Enable the students to know what is needed to become a reporter and how to conduct an interview.
  3. Train the students’ reading ability of skimming and scanning.

Teaching important and difficult points:

  1. Help the students learn about the qualities needed to be a good reporter.
  2. Encourage the students to make clear how to get an accurate story and how to protect a story from accusation.

Teaching preparations:

Find some introductions about famous persons and some

video materials of interview through the internet. Prepare a

microphone for the students to do the interview.

Teaching procedures:

. Lead-in

 

T: Today we are going to learn a lesson about “making the news”. Now let’s enjoy a video. (Tow minutes later) From the video, we know a woman is conducting an interview with George Bush, former president of the USA. Do you know who she is? And what’s her job?

Ss: She is Yang Lan. And she is a journalist.

T: good. She is a most famous women reporter in our country who has interviewed a great many famous people all over the world. Today we’ll learn a passage related to this job and the title is “My First Work Assignment”.

Before reading, let’s predict: why the new journalist think it “unforgettable”? Encourage students to find out the answer: he got many useful information about how to be a good journalist and how to cover a story.

. Fast reading

Please go through the text as quickly as possible and find out the questions mentioned. Pay attention to the way the questions develop in the dialogue.

Students will find out 7 questions that appear in the text.

T: what are the questions about?

Sa: the questions are finding out more about the qualities and skills needed for the job.

T: Thank you.

. Careful reading

T: Now let’s read the text more carefully and answer the following questions.

  1. Paragraph one is used as a/ an __________.
  2. Divide the body of the text into 3 parts.
  3. What are the qualities needed to be a good journalist?

Students may find it easy to work out the first question, but the other two questions a lot more difficult.

T: Who can answer question one, any volunteer?

S: paragraph one is used as an introduction.

T: Good. How about question 2, who can answer it?

(Students may find it difficult to answer) please work in groups of 4 to discuss the question. (After discussion, some groups may find out the answer. Ask one group to present their answer and another group to tell whether they agree.)

S: Part 1 is question 1and 2; part 2 is from question 3 to question 6; and the third part is question 7.

T: Based on the three parts, we can find out more about a good journalist, can you tell me what qualities are needed? You can use some adjectives to express yourselves.

S: experience, professional, cooperative, curious, sensitive, efficient, well-prepared and so on.

(The teacher make a conclusion)

. Role play

T: since we have known how to be a qualified reporter, let’s have a group discussion to make up a dialogue between a famous person and a reporter. I will give you some useful expression to help you, ok?

   Write an introduction of a famous person, and be sure to use the adjectives that we have learned in this class.
